Emergency preparedness

It is believed that the average American is generally unprepared for disasters. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross found that only about 40% of Americans have an emergency supply kit in their home, and only about 50% have developed an emergency plan with their family. Additionally, many Americans do not have basic emergency supplies such as non-perishable food, water, and a flashlight. These findings suggest that a significant number of Americans may not be prepared to cope with the challenges that a disaster can bring, such as power outages, loss of access to food and water, and other disruptions to daily life. It is important for individuals and families to take steps to become more prepared for disasters in order to ensure their safety and well-being.

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

― Benjamin Franklin

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a convergent plate boundary located off the coast of the Pacific Northwest region of North America. It stretches from northern California to southern British Columbia, and is marked by the Juan de Fuca Plate diving beneath the North American Plate. This subduction process has led to the formation of the Cascades mountain range and the generation of large, destructive earthquakes. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is capable of producing earthquakes with magnitudes up to 9.0, and it is considered to be a high-risk area for a potentially devastating megaquake.

A key to ensuring you do not end up stranded is have the ability to jump start your vehicle. Jumper cables are a great start however, what it you end up some where with no other vehicles? That is where jump pack come in handy. In this video we take a look at the Viking jump pack from Harbor Freight.

The average American is unprepared for disasters, but why? Even those that live in areas of the U.S. that are considered high risk. My first though was it is about money however, that is not usually the case according to some surveys.

I picked up a 12v Vevor Diesel heater for testing. I am currently using to warm my work shop. My work shop is not insulated (yet) so this small heater can only take the edge off. For example, when the outside temp is in 30s (F) the inside temp was around 50 F.

Do not fall victim to winter weather while traveling. In my winter prep series you see some example of what to pack into your vehicle kits.

We teamed up with PatioGem and in this video I take a first look at their propane bottle refill adapter. I have been refilling my own bottles for 10 years now. If you use portable propane heaters or stoves I recommend learn how to refill your own bottles.

JF. EGWO offers a whole line of vehicle jump starter packs. We picked up their 2000 amp model to add to a vehicle preparedness kit. The 2000 amp model is a 6 and 1 device.

In today’s world we have become very reliant on the power grid. However, for many of us the grid we are connected are becoming less and less reliable. A power outage kit is great way prepare yourself and your family for the next power outage.

When I have the time and resources, I prefer to make it myself. In this case I build stove box for my sprits/alcohol stove.
